The last couple of months at work have been extremely hectic. My boss, the only other lawyer in the firm, has taken a leave of absence for about nine months, so that leaves me as the sole lawyer of the firm. Now, I don’t mind having a lot of responsibility, but it is very intimidating having to make sure the firm is bringing in enough new clients to pay the monthly bills and payroll. For a few weeks, I really felt like things were not going to go well, however we have made it two months. God has given me a peace so I don’t worry about the bills. I have given those burdens over to God and let His will take over. If this is the situation He has placed me in, and it is His will that I continue on in this position then I know He will take care of me (and the rest of the office and clients). The good thing about the business I’m in (practicing law) is that one fee can sometimes take care of a month’s worth of bills. The problem I run into, and one that I will write about in a future post is how to get clients when you are just starting out as a young attorney. I working hard a projecting confidence and increasing my knowledge (which helps me build confidence) and we are getting several new clients each week that allow us to continue to serve our entire client base. While things are daunting now, I have never been let down by God in the past, so I don’t worry about the future. More on that testimony in the future as well. The moral of this post is: when things seem so big and they just get built up higher and higher around you - God is bigger and God is in control. Amen!
One of the things I have learned so far running a small business is that you need to learn to use your staff. For a couple of days after I took over the law practice, I tried doing all of “my” work myself. What I found is that I need to be more efficient, and that includes delegating some of the work to my staff. One of the things that really saved me a lot of time was to begin dictating all of my letters and notes to files. I don’t know what the exact research numbers would show, but I know you can talk a lot faster than you can type or write, and it doesn’t take too long to proof the final product. Rather than spending 15-30 minutes thinking of what to say and typing in, then proofing it, I just speak into the recorder in a matter of seconds or minutes and my assistant can type it up. Now, this is just one simple example of things that I’m sure most business owners do every day that they could save time and money on by delegating the work to someone else. There are literally hundreds of other things such as packing and shipping, getting the mail ready to go out each morning, opening mail, checking messages on the voice mail, and so much more.Â
I know as a small business owner you take on many roles including: president, designer, book keeper, shipping clerk, receptionist and much more. When you can delegate things to other people to do it makes you more efficient because you are able to focus on the work that really needs your attention. Take some of the stress off of yourself and spread the work around a little. You will be more profitable, and your mind will be more focused on doing the work you are meant to do.
While the topics listed in the header may seem like a wide variety, I have found in my job that these topics: God, life, business, and law seem to go hand in hand. I am constantly amazed at how God works in my life through my job by bringing me in contact with clients and others (including other attorneys) that have something profound to tell me, and that I need to hear, at that exact moment. Many times I complain about my job, but at that point God slams something in front of me that forces me to realize how fortunate I am, and how much I have been blessed.Â
I also plan on writing about my experiences selling on the online auction web site, ebay. I sold a lot on ebay during law school so I could make a little money and help my wife with the bills without totally relying on student loans. I have read a lot books, reports, magazines, and more, but I haven’t just read about selling on ebay, I have actually sold on ebay. I took some time off from selling on ebay while I was preparing for the bar exam, but I am getting back into selling and I will discuss my strategies, product research methods, sales tips, shipping tips and much more for selling on ebay. I am really excited about this part of the blog and may have to separate this into a new blog sometime in the future.Â
Please be sure to check back on this blog often because something new happens to me every day at work and I get to hear all types of stories. Of course I won’t be talking about specific cases, clients, or opponents, but I do plan on discussing the things I learn along the way about God, life, business, law, and more. Check in out!
