QUESTION:
I was recently transferred by my company from Texas to Greenville. I owed back taxes for several years and had been contacted by the IRS in Texas. Can they find me here in Greenville and can you help me even though the tax liability arose in Texas?
ANSWER:
Welcome to Greenville and thank you for your question. I am constantly amazed by how mobile our society has become and how many people move to Greenville each year from all over the world. Your question is in two parts. First, unfortunately for you, there is no question that your federal tax liability will follow you to Greenville. The IRS can easily find you by several means, so it is just a matter of time before those nasty letters will be arriving. I don’t know if there is state income tax in Texas, but if there is, it will not follow you here since Texas’ authority extends only to its borders. There are some exceptions to that, but it is unlikely that Texas would file a suit here to collect the tax. In answer to the second part of your question, I can and will be very happy to help you with your federal tax problem, no matter where it arose. I can get the case transferred to the local division and deal through local revenue officers in Greenville or Columbia. I have several clients who have recently moved to Greenville and I have had no problems helping them. Why don’t you call my office for an appointment and we can discuss your problem. As I always say, it is better to be proactive with the IRS than reactive. Your first visit is free and at that time we can discuss fees and I can lay out a plan to get you out of your predicament. I look forward to hearing from you.
